What Produce Should you Buy Organic for a Healthy Pregnancy?

When it comes to eating clean, most people know that organic is the way to go for a healthy pregnancy. This is doubly true for expectant moms! When you eat organic, you know that you and your bump are eating food produced without radiation treatments, pesticides or genetic modification. It’s definitely one of the best ways to ensure a healthy pregnancy! But there’s one other thing people know about organic foods – they can get expensive!  If you don’t know where to start, beginner organic shoppers may find themselves wasting a bunch of cash. There’s even information available that says some foods have so few pesticides on them that buying organic is a waste. If you’re trying to have a healthy pregnancy on a tight budget, we have the solution for you!

What Produce Should you Buy Organic for a Healthy Pregnancy?

Say hello to the Dirty Dozen: 12 fruits and vegetables tested to contain the highest amount of pesticides out of all American produce.  Every year the US Government takes samples of produce from all around the country to test for pesticides and other toxic chemicals. The Environmental World Group, a nonprofit environmental organization, took these reports and broke them down into a shopping list. When it comes to these 12 items, buying organic is a must!

Over the last few years, most researchers have agreed that exposure to pesticides, even in very small doses, can leave some pretty long term damage. They’re especially dangerous for developing fetuses and young children. The worst part? The pesticide testing included washing and peeling, which usually had very little effect on the amount of pesticides STILL present on the produce. If you want to avoid exposure to these dangerous chemicals and make sure you have a healthy pregnancy, do your best to buy the items on this list organically. This report from the EWG says it all:

“… people who eat five fruits and vegetables a day from the Dirty Dozen™ list consume an average of 10 pesticides a day. Those who eat from the 15 least contaminated conventionally-grown fruits and vegetables ingest fewer than 2 pesticides daily.”

So there you have it! If you want to have a super healthy pregnancy, be sure to buy your organic produce from this list. Your bump will appreciate it!
