Making the Decision to Try for Baby #2

Feeling that baby fever again? Maybe your little one has just grown out of that snuggly newborn phase and it’s giving you all the feels, or maybe you have a tot running around and you think it’s time for a sibling. Either way, making the decision to make your family a little bit bigger can be a big decision.

If you’re feeling the pregnancy itch, make sure you take a few things into account before you make the leap. Check out our list below to help you decide if you’re ready for baby #2!

Things to Consider Before Trying to Conceive

Why do you want to get pregnant?

Many times, mamas receive a lot of pressure to have additional children after their first one.  Make sure that you want to add another baby to your family because it’s what you want, and not because you feel like you have to in order to complete your family.

Is your partner on board?

Making sure you’re on the same page about building your family with your spouse or partner is the best way to avoid miscommunication. If you’re both on board, it’s baby-making time! If not, take a breather to figure out where the disconnect is, and how you might be able to fix it.

Is your house ready for another baby?

Do you have a good place to set up baby #2’s nursery? Would the baby be sharing a room with a sibling? You might want to be sure the crib isn’t in your first born’s room, at least for those first few weeks of no sleep.

Are you and your partner ready to take the leap financially?

It’s no surprise that babies aren’t cheap. Make sure you and your family are ready to accept the change that will come with having another little one added to the family. Consider daycare costs, or if you’d prefer to stay home with your littles, have a discussion about the logistics.

What does it mean for your first little one?

You might also want to take into consideration your first little one’s age, self-sufficiency, and feelings.  Try to come up with a plan to make the adjustment smooth, by keeping up with the current routines and schedules as much as possible. It will make juggling the two kids much easier.
