Managing Labor Pain Without Medication

Managing Labor Pain Without Medication

Baby is on the way, and you are SO excited! You’ve read all the books, talked to your healthcare professional and are all set for this natural birth experience you’ve heard so much about. But maybe you can’t shake that looming concern of how you’ll manage your pain without medication. You’re in luck. There are SO many methods of pain management out there that have nothing to do with any kind of medication. Here are a few of our favorites.

KEEP MOVING

This is a huge one that often gets overlooked. Many times, when the labor pain hits, many mamas think laying down in a bed is the way to go. But did you know that pain is your body’s signal that it’s time to move? Think about sitting around the house or at the office–certain positions cause you to move and adjust without even thinking about it. Why should this be any different? Ask your medical professional to help you stay mobile as long as possible–take a walk, dance a little, just stay on the go.

GET WET

This one is a little more popular and non-medicated births are often associated with laboring in a tub. Water is an incredible vehicle for pain relief. And while water births are a wonderful way to go, taking a shower can actually be even better for you. Hopping in the shower allows you to direct the stream and pressure toward your pain points better–let it massage your belly, back and even neck. Wherever those labor pains are hitting the hardest!

WORK WITH YOUR FIVE SENSES

Did you know that indulging your senses is one of the best ways to distract the body from pain? Place your motivational birth affirmations around your delivery room, play soothing music or sounds, burn candles or diffuse oils, have your partner massage your back–the possibilities are endless. Engaging in several activities will keep different senses busy, effectively keeping your mind off some of the delivery pain.

INVEST IN A BIRTHING BALL

While this ties in well with movement, birthing balls can provide a lot of pain relief on their own. Quite popular in the natural birth realm, these balls allow you to rock, sway and move into more comfortable positions. They can also get your hips moving and blood flowing to your uterus, encouraging labor.

Every birth is beautiful, but when choosing to go the natural route, there’s no need for unnecessary fear. Practice any of these tips and you’ll be well on your way to natural pain relief — no medication required.
